| The New Rules on Hiring: The Legal Way to Handle No-Match Letters and I-9s |
|

“Crackdown to Focus on Illegal Hires” – Chicago Tribune
“Immigration Agents Put Heat on Employers” – U.S. News & World Report
“Employers Bracing for Hardship and Chaos” – New York Times
Are you ready for the crackdown?
The Bush Administration last month unveiled a pile of 26 new immigration-related enforcement initiatives, many of which affect the way you hire, fire and keep paperwork on employees.
Among the changes:
- adjustments to the number and type of allowable I-9 documents
- increased fines on employers who hire illegals
- requiring certain employers to use the government’s online verification system
The New York Times says the “most infuriating and dangerous is the crackdown involving ‘no-match’ letters.” The feds send such letters to companies when they find discrepancies in employees' Social Security numbers.
The new rules lay out step-by-step instructions on how employers must respond to such letters – or face fines of $10,000 per employee or criminal sanctions. When and how enforcement will happen remains up in the air – all the more reason you need to be prepared!
Don't put your organization or your career at risk. Get ahead of the curve by learning about these changes – and the common mistakes you’re making with your current I-9 process.
